First select the type of movement you want to measure. Here you can choose between a linear or rotational movement.
The position detection can be incremental or absolute. The incremental measuring method provides a relative position as well as direction of movement, which requires an assignment to a reference point (starting point) at the beginning of the measurement. This is done by homing the axis. The absolute measuring method provides concrete position information at any axis position. A reference run at the beginning of the measurement is not necessary.

In a customer-specific inspection system, components are measured for their quality and then sorted. Special camera and microscope techniques are used to monitor the specifications of the components and ensure appropriate sorting. The positioning of the testing technology is carried out by high-resolution measuring technology, which was individually adapted to the requirements of the testing system and the available installation space.
According to the customer's requirements, a measuring range of up to 90° should be realized and the measuring system should be able to be integrated into the installation space provided. In addition, it should be able to detect very fast changes in direction with high precision in order to meet the high measurement requirements of the test system.
The choice was made for the RIK 4 rotary optical measuring system from NUMERIK JENA, as this system was able to meet all the required specifications. Due to extremely limited space, only a section of a graduated disk (disk segment) was integrated into the system instead of a complete graduated disk with 360° measuring range. This meant that the specified installation space could be maintained. A reference mark positioned on the graduated disk segment according to the customer's specifications enabled the customer to reference the system precisely when starting it.
